Central Vermont was once the center of America’s stone industry. Rutland was home to the largest marble company in the world, while Barre became known as America’s granite capital. But as the industry faded, these working-class towns were left searching for a new identity. We went to find out what’s left of the blue-collar industry that forged Vermont—and later, headed into the hills for a day at a racetrack.
