And it lands blind, on bicycle gear, with a muscle car chasing it down the runway shouting altitude over the radio. This is the Lockheed U-2 Dragon Lady, the seventy-year-old spy plane the United States still can't replace.
In this video we fly a full U-2 mission from brake release to wingtip sparks. The climb to 70,000 feet, where a single General Electric F118 gasps for air and the cabin runs as thin as Everest. The coffin corner—the 5-knot window between stalling and overspeed that the pilot rides for 12 hours straight in a $250,000 David Clark pressure suit. The SYERS-2 camera that counts trucks from 13 miles up, photographs an area the size of Western Europe in a single pass, and sees over borders the plane never crosses. And the landing U-2 pilots call the hardest part of the mission—the float, the bicycle gear, the titanium wingtip skids, and the chase cars driven by fellow U-2 pilots who talk every landing down by voice.
