The Maersk Triple-E is one of the largest container ships ever built — 400 meters long, 18,000 containers per voyage, powered by two ultra-long-stroke engines that broke a rule every naval architecture textbook had agreed on for decades.
This video follows one Triple-E from dawn departure in Aarhus, Denmark, to the final crane move at Gothenburg's container terminal. We open on the bridge with the chief mate solving the bay plan — the eighteen-thousand-piece puzzle that has to be right before the ship can leave the dock — and follow the operation down to the lashing crew installing twist locks, the engineer monitoring six hundred reefer plugs, and the waste heat recovery system that pulls electricity out of exhaust gases that should have left the ship through the funnel.
One engine is supposed to be more efficient than two. Mærsk's own engineers said so. They built the ship with two anyway. We walk through the math on the ultra-long-stroke engines, the twin-propeller geometry, and the slow steaming strategy that makes a Triple-E about thirty-five percent more fuel-efficient per container than the ships half its size still working the same routes.
