Welcome to our latest video, where we take you on a tour of one of the world's most advanced and newest laboratories of its kind, The BBSRC National Virology Centre inside The Pirbright Institute's new Plowright Building. This laboratory is one of the biggest investments in the #science infrastructure of the UK #bioeconomy in decades, providing a national capability for research on #viruses.
Designed to handle even the deadliest viruses such as #Ebola, the building mixes hard-edged reality with person-centric touches to attract and keep the world's top scientific talent. It's a combination of innovation, technology, and design that makes it stand out as one of only a handful of similar labs across the globe.
What's impressive about this laboratory is its design, which takes brave and bold steps in construction. High containment labs are usually buried deep inside a building to keep dangerous elements as far from the outside as possible. However, The Plowright Building uses advances in construction materials and methodology to create the highest levels of containment, sealed on the outside, while allowing natural light to come in.
The result is a laboratory that is not only functional but also comfortable, allowing everything from meetings to meals to be shared between high-containment researchers and other staff in the building. And all this is achieved without compromising the necessary principles of physical separation.
