With a milking herd of more than 64,000 cows, the South Australian dairy industry makes up a small percentage of national milk production. However, these dairy cows, on average, have the highest milk yields. Meaning that South Australian dairy cows are some of the most exploited in the country.

This year, Farm Transparency Project investigators went to the South-East dairy region, where the majority of the state’s dairy is produced. Located near the rural city of Murray Bridge, and on a floodplain, is Jervois Road. Running through several dairy farming communities, this one road is dotted with dozens of dairy farms.

We decided to investigate.
