With America’s 250th birthday just around the corner, Open House is offering an early look at one of the most ambitious celebrations in the nation’s history: Sail4th 250! This exciting event will bring the largest flotilla of tall ships ever assembled into the New York Harbor, where vessels from around the world will sail past the Statue of Liberty and up the Hudson River in a once-in-a-generation maritime parade.
Host Sara Gore previews the celebration with a look aboard two of the ships set to take part. The German Navy’s Gorch Fock, built in 1958, has trained generations of cadets while crossing oceans and enduring decades at sea. Meanwhile, the NRP Sagres — a stunning 292-foot Portuguese Navy tall ship that launched in 1937 — continues to serve as a training vessel as well as symbol of maritime heritage, having completed multiple global voyages. Additionally, we explore the Dutch tall ship Oosterschelde, a three-masted schooner that has circled the globe three times and visited more than 50 countries, will also join the celebration as it sails into New York. These ships will be open to visitors in New York City from July 5 through July 8, before continuing on to Boston for Sail Boston 2026. And back on land? We dive right into New York CIty’s deep Revolutionary roots. At Fraunces Tavern, a downtown National Historic Landmark and NYC's oldest bar, the Founding Fathers — including George Washington — used to gather to toast to liberty as history unfolded. Uptown, Morris-Jumel Mansion in Washington Heights offers another window into the past, where figures such as Alexander Hamilton and Aaron Burr left their mark on the story of a young nation.
