Have you heard of the 27 club? It includes a list of famous celebrities who all died tragically young, at the age of 27. Today, in our new Freaky Friday mini-series, we're taking a deep dive into the tragic life of Amy Winehouse.
From a young age, Amy had been struggling with an eating disorder and depression – demons that would shadow her throughout her short life. But, despite these struggles, Amy rose to become the voice of a generation. Her debut album, Frank, sold over a million copies. But it was her 2006 masterpiece, Back to Black, featuring the iconic song "Rehab", that catapulted her to international fame.
But, Amy's world quickly spiralled out of control after meeting her future husband Blake Fielder-Civil. He introduced her to hard and dangerous drugs, which she became addicted to. Amy felt herself dying on the inside as her addiction got worse and she continued to drink excessively to numb the pain.
Then, on July 23, 2011, Amy Winehouse died of alcohol poisoning at her Camden home. She died at the age of 27.
