In Heterodox Academy’s new research brief, "The New Landscape of Civics Centers in Higher Education", our researchers identified 45 civic centers across 25 states, many founded in just the past few years. These centers focus on revitalizing civic thought, strengthening civic discourse, and expanding opportunities for open inquiry on campus.
The data shows a clear trend:
• Half of the centers were founded since 2021
• 22 new centers launched between 2022 and 2025, 13 by state mandate
• Public universities in Republican-controlled states account for most growth
• Private-university centers tend to emphasize civic discourse
Supporters see these centers as a way to broaden campus dialogue and strengthen civic learning. Critics raise concerns about politicization, legislative overreach, or the risk of intellectual siloing.
