​Exploring a side of Singapore you rarely see on the typical tourist guide! After hearing so many people talk about Geylang being one of the most unique and distinct neighborhoods in the country, I hopped on a bus to check it out for myself and get a real feel for the vibe.
​Geylang is definitely a complete contrast to the sleek, ultra-modern, and polished areas of Singapore. It’s raw, a bit rundown, and holds a mix of everything—from industrial workshops and foreign food markets to famous hawker spots and the well-known red light district (the Lorongs).
​During my walk, I spent time people-watching and soaking in the atmosphere:
​The Atmosphere: It definitely feels a bit sketchy and unrefined compared to upscale neighborhoods, though I felt perfectly safe exploring.
​Local Traditions: Caught a group celebrating the Hungry Ghost Festival (Month of the Ghost) on the street.
​Local Commerce & Industry: Passed by active industrial spaces, vibrant foreign food markets, and bustling local eateries.
​Budget Stays: Checked out a few local hotels at the end of the walk to see what the room prices and conditions look like in this part of town.
