Last winter, I had the opportunity to tag along on a luxury Kyushu tour that included a few amazing ryokans, and the opportunity to spend a night on the coveted Seven Stars (Nanatsuboshi) luxury train that runs through Southern Japan.

One of the basic survival skills for living in Japan on a budget is learning how to make Japanese curry! When I was a language school student paying out of pocket for school fees, I would make a huge batch of curry on Sunday and eat it throughout the whole week.
(On particularly poor weekends I would use bacon instead of beef or pork, or sweet potato instead of real potato.)
What do you put in curry? I always always always put cheese in mine, but Kraft sent me this new Parmesan Cheese to try out and Ive been using it ever since, even when I order delivery curry from Coco Ichi or Yellow Spice. Its powdered but it has a distinct cheesy flavour that complements the spices used in Japanese curry.
The cheese was provided by Kraft to try, but these opinions are my own. :-)

Unzen is such a nice area to visit if you have a car - the remote location away from any major train lines makes it a quiet and peaceful hot spring town, free from excessive tourism or gimmicks that other, more popular destinations have.
If you live in Kyushu (especially Kumamoto, Nagasaki, Saga, or Fukuoka) a weekend trip to Unzen is a great choice if you:
✅ Have a Drivers Licence
✅ Enjoy Hiking and Nature
✅ Are an Independent Traveler
✅ Want a Secluded Getaway
The nearby towns of Minami-Shimabara and Obama are just a short drive down either side of the mountain, and offer their own attractions as well (such as dolphin watching!)
