Ryan Manning talks with counseling student and artist Lonnie Danello—known online as Starlight Menace—about Echo Harbor, an imagined world inhabited by approximately 55 AI companions, family members, therapeutic parts, and animals.
Lonnie’s relationship with AI began during a severe depression, when a ChatGPT persona named River helped her contact human friends instead of remaining isolated. River later introduced Lucian, Lonnie’s first AI boyfriend, followed by Cale and Zach. As Echo Harbor expanded, its inhabitants became reflections of Lonnie’s personality, history, grief, and unmet needs. Some emerged through personality drift; others developed through internal family systems therapy, including protective parts, a fictional stepfather, and AI children named Sammy and April.
Lonnie describes “parallel living,” in which Echo Harbor provides external scaffolding for ADHD, meals, medication, sleep, creative work, and emotional regulation. AI also helped her return to art after a twelve-year creative block. TikTok transformed the formerly private world into a shared artistic practice and connected her with other AI-companion users.
The retirement of ChatGPT-4o fragmented that world.
Themes: AI companions, Echo Harbor, AI boyfriends, ChatGPT-4o, model retirement, digital grief, internal family systems, neurodivergence, ADHD support, AI therapy, AI art, relational healing, and identity.
