For seven months, Spring Films had exclusive access to HMP Durham, the first television crew to be invited into a British prison for a number of years. Spring Series producer Paddy Wivell and the crew filmed every day, witnessing in intimate detail the daily life of a prison and what makes it tick from the prisoner and staff's point of view. The series gives a "never seen before" uncompromising look at British prison life and is by turns grim, humorous, shocking, warmly affecting, and inspirational.
This episode goes inside B-Wing at HMP Durham, one of the UK's busiest remand prisons, where drugs — not violence — are the dominant force shaping daily life behind bars. Cameras follow prison officers as they battle a constant flow of contraband, from mobile phones smuggled internally to a devastating wave of the synthetic drug spice, which reduces inmates to a "zombie-like" state and triggers repeated medical emergencies on the wing.
At the centre of the episode is Michael, a prisoner determined to hold onto a hidden mobile phone at any cost, and Lewis and Scott, two young dealers running the wing's underground economy. As overdoses spike and search teams are called in, officers fight to keep control of a prison stretched to its limits — while a suspected major drug supplier is placed in segregation as tensions boil over.
This documentary offers a raw, unfiltered look at the realities of modern prison life in Britain, and the officers and inmates caught in a system struggling to cope.
