Inside FAMOUS ITALIAN PIZZA New York City
In this episode of NYC Pizza Slices, I run into a challenge I didn’t think was possible in New York City. After a meeting on Fifth Avenue, I set out on a mission to grab a quick slice, the classic NYC move. But something strange happens. I walk nearly seven blocks surrounded by high end retail like the NBA Store, Nike House of Innovation, and Adidas Store Fifth Avenue, plus endless New York souvenir shops, and somehow I do not see a single pizza place in sight.
Just when it feels impossible, I finally see hope in the distance. A giant PIZZA sign sits above scaffolding. That is where I discover Famous Italian Pizza, located just a block from the Empire State Building. I head inside and order a single cheese slice, the NYC staple. I also talk with the worker, who shares that the shop has been open for about one year.
As always in the NYC Pizza Slices series, I judge the slice across four categories: temperature, walkability (how it holds up while walking around New York City), overall taste, and value. I eat the slice inside the shop while tourists come in and out. Before revealing the value score and final rating, I take you on a quick walk around Fifth Avenue and Madison Avenue and talk about how the area has changed since 2020, including lunch spots that have closed and what it was like when I used to work in this neighborhood.
At the end, I reveal the final average score and answer the most important question. Would I come back?
