Between February and April 2020, approximately 22% of the small businesses in our country became inactive (meaning their self-employed owners were not working), according to a study by the National Bureau of Economic Research. Early-stage economic impacts of the Covid-19 pandemic have hit minority-owned businesses much harder than the average. In that same time frame, 26% of Asian-owned businesses became inactive, 36% of Latinx-owned, and 41% of Black-owned.
While there are many factors behind these disparities, access to capital and support resources for minority business owners is perhaps the most immediate. What are we doing about it? Join September Hargrove of JPMorgan Chase, Carla Walker-Miller of Walker-Miller Energy Services, and Wendy Jackson of The Kresge Foundation as they unpack the challenges and solutions their organizations have faced while investing in the future of Detroit—especially in business communities who have been historically underserved.
