Land degradation and desertification are highly important environmental issues further exacerbated by climate change. A range of activities involving land management contribute to land degradation including crop cultivation and livestock, forestry, mining, urban expansion, and water management. As for most other environment and climate change related challenges, innovation and technology has solutions to offer. While not being able to solve all challenges and not being a substitute for fundamental changes to the way land is managed, the diversity and sheer number of solutions that emerge from the national systems of innovation is impressive and probably unprecedented. With point of departure in the free digital-first WIPO Green Technology Book where more than 200 solutions are exemplifying this diversity, the session will dive into the role of innovation and technology in responding to the land degradation and desertification.
