Along the impenetrable wall next to the sunken road was a rather unremarkable house at the edge of a wide upon field. This was the Innis house and during the Battle of Fredricksburg it was subjected to a hailstorm of miniballs and cannon shot.
Outside the Innis house is a memorial to Richard Rowland Kirkland from the south carolina volunteers. at the risk of his life this American soldier of sublime compassion brought water to his wounded foes at Fredricksburg. The fighting men on both sides of the lines called him the Angel of Marye's heights. Many fell here, especially Union soldiers and are resting in a national cemetery on these very heights.
