Learn Inline Skating: Turn with Confidence! Backward & Forward Transitions – Frontside Spin & Backside Spin
In this tutorial from our Inline Skating Beginner Series, you'll learn two of the most important turning techniques for beginners: the Frontside Spin and the Backside Spin. Both are fundamental inline skating skills that will help you turn safely, smoothly, and with confidence in any direction.
As a passionate skater and long-time instructor, I've had the privilege of coaching many people—from complete beginners to advanced skaters. In this tutorial, I'm sharing the experience and training methods I've developed over the years to help you progress faster, skate more confidently, and enjoy the learning process even more.
► Frontside Spin – From Forward to Backward Skating
The Frontside Spin is one of the very first turns every inline skater should learn. It allows you to transition smoothly and under control from skating forward to skating backward.
With a little practice, you'll quickly notice how natural and fluid this transition feels.
► Backside Spin – Transition Back to Forward Skating
Once you've mastered the Frontside Spin, it's time to learn the Backside Spin.
This technique allows you to transition safely and smoothly from skating backward back into forward skating. Together, the Frontside and Backside Spins form the foundation for countless other skating techniques, tricks, and direction changes.
Although both spins are relatively quick to learn, there are several small details that make the difference between an unstable turn and one that feels smooth, balanced, and controlled.
► Practical Everyday Use
Being able to turn confidently isn't just useful for tricks.
Whether you're skating on bike paths, through the city, during urban skating sessions, or on long fitness rides, controlled transitions greatly improve your safety and overall mobility on inline skates.
Once you've mastered the Frontside Spin and Backside Spin, you'll find that many everyday skating situations become much easier and more enjoyable.
