Chilean researchers have developed copper-and-zinc suits to help injured penguins recover after surgery, especially from wounds caused by getting trapped in fishing nets.
The suits were created by adapting copper bodysuits previously used for other animals so they could be used on birds.
Protecting the wounds is difficult because penguins have flexible necks, allowing them to pull out stitches or reopen wounds while they heal.
The suits do not look metallic. Tiny particles of copper and zinc are woven into the red fabric.
Researchers say copper and zinc can help prevent the growth of bacteria, fungi and mites, while zinc may also help damaged tissue heal faster by supporting the growth of new blood vessels.
The suits were tested on five penguins at the Humboldt Conservation Centre in Coquimbo. Four had wounds believed to have been caused by human activity, mainly getting caught in fishing nets.
