In this Dark Case documentary, we examine three disturbing true crime stories where ordinary moments became life-changing investigations. Actress and playwright Nicole duFresne was returning home with her fiancé and friends after celebrating a new job in New York City when they encountered a group looking for trouble. The confrontation on Manhattan’s Lower East Side would lead to a major investigation, a controversial public debate and a sentence of life without parole. Also featured is the extraordinary case of former NYPD officer Gilberto Valle, who became known in the media as the “Cannibal Cop.” After his wife discovered deeply disturbing online conversations involving women they knew, investigators had to determine whether Valle was preparing to commit real crimes or participating in extreme fantasy role-play. His conviction, imprisonment and eventual acquittal raised difficult questions about when dark thoughts become criminal actions. Valle later transformed the same subject matter into books, including the horror novel A Gathering of Evil. Also, we explore the case of 20-year-old Kaylin Gillis, who was travelling with friends through rural New York when they accidentally entered the wrong driveway. Although the group immediately tried to leave, homeowner Kevin Monahan emerged with a shotgun. His changing explanations, the evidence presented at trial and his lack of responsibility would ultimately result in a second-degree murder conviction and a sentence of 25 years to life.
These three true crime cases examine sudden confrontations, disturbing online behaviour, controversial legal arguments, criminal investigations and the irreversible consequences of decisions made within seconds.
