The Middle Ages was an era associated with chivalry, the rise of majestic Gothic cathedrals, and the birth of Renaissance art and literature. However, it was also a time of paradox, for beneath the façade of courtliness, magnificent feats of engineering, and the flourishing of the arts, lay a darker truth, of brutal punishments, uncivilised savagery, misogyny, child exploitation, and people trafficking.
