IVIG stands for intravenous immunoglobulin. It’s a treatment made from purified antibodies collected from donated human plasma.

In simple terms, IVIG gives the immune system a concentrated supply of antibodies. Doctors use it for a variety of conditions, including:

* Certain autoimmune and neurological disorders
* Some immune deficiencies
* Conditions where the immune system is attacking the body’s own tissues
* Certain inflammatory disorders

It’s given through an IV infusion, usually over several hours. Depending on the condition, it may be given once or repeatedly.

Common side effects can include headache, fatigue, chills, nausea, or flu-like symptoms. More serious reactions are possible but uncommon.
