This is a step by step process of how to build a crate for the purpose of shipping an Industrial Sewing Machine.
This method solves the problem of how to effectively stabilize an item in excess of 70 pounds and still protect its somewhat delicate components like the thread tensioner, thread take up linkage and various knobs and guides .
Thanks to Pocket83 for the suggestion of handles. The addition of handles provides many benefits. First it makes the job of the many shipping handlers easier and that makes for happier people and happier people tend to do a more careful job. With handles the package can be dragged along the floor and/or picked up by two people. The handles raise the lift point so you don't have to bend over as far and strain your back. If the handles are used to move the crate it tends to keep the crate in an upright position which is preferred.
I choose to use solid wood for the base and stabilizers of the Crate, plywood for the main two sides and cheaper OSB for the remaining 3 sides as the weight of the machine is not directly attached to these.
Standard Phillips head screws are used so that the crate can be disassembled with a single screw driver and a knife.
