Original Album: “To the Moon OST”
/ Since I already was already working on DARK STAR, my
"epic/orchestral/contemporary/energetic/dissonant/rock/steammachine shmup" rendition of Lone Star, I wanted to do another cover completely in the opposite direction. I had listened to To the Moon's soundtrack after it was nominated for finalist on IGF this year, and I thought that it fit so well with the emotional direction of the game... However, because I was touring doing the live keyboards for a romantic pop singer across the wild lands of Chile, only a few hours remained to do this complicated task! Between the love songs on stage and the dissonance of DARK STAR, a simple melody oriented song was desperately needed.
Suddenly, I came across this beautiful tune. It was so inspiring and
emotional - the melody felt so natural and the structure was so
clear, it was like I have hearded it 10,000 times before, some kind of musical love at first sight. Laura Shigihara's interpretation of
"Everything’s Alright" was also lovely. I was thinking that maybe
she could provide me the vocal track for an string arrangement or
something... And then I realized that the original track only has
light piano over it!
After more than 24 hours awake working on DARK STAR, I thought I was ready for some mellow music. But then, while I was doing this arrangement, each time I heard the song I found myself starting to cry! I didn't even feel sad! It seemed that this song activated some kind of "romantic reflex" within me (a complicated way to say that it was a pretty song), and now everytime I hear the string fall on 3:05, I run out of air and tears try to escape from my eyes. Even now, as I sit here after 36 hours awake, finally writing the liner notes, I still cry every time I hear it! I think I'm going to call my girlfriend...
