India’s unemployment rate may be falling — but does that tell the full story?
India has one of the world’s largest youth populations, yet 25% of Indians aged 15–29 are NEET: Not in Employment, Education or Training. That amounts to roughly 92 million young Indians who are neither working, studying nor receiving training.
In this video, we look beyond the headline unemployment rate to understand India’s deeper jobs crisis. Why can unemployment fall even when people are struggling to find work? What happens when discouraged job-seekers simply stop looking? And why does India’s employment rate tell a very different story?
We examine youth unemployment, graduate joblessness, women’s employment, the quality of jobs being created, stagnant wages, education spending and the growing challenge of putting India’s demographic dividend to work.
