Indian Ambassador to Nepal Naveen Srivastava spoke exclusively to The Indian Express about the number of Indians missing and rescued, and India’s ongoing rescue and relief efforts after the devastating floods in Nepal. He said ,"Prime Minister Narendra Modi spoke to Nepal Prime Minister Balendra Shah, conveyed his condolences and assured him that India stands with Nepal and will provide all possible support for rescue and relief operations. Srivastava said India has so far sent more than 67 tonnes of relief material to Nepal, including tents, medicines and other essential equipment. Two specialised teams for the rescue operation. The first team has carried out of the affected areas to identify points where rescue operations can be undertaken. Based on that assessment, 13 personnel were then sent for the rescue operation. He added that India has also sent DNA specialists to help with the identification of victims. On Indians affected by the floods, the Ministry of External Affairs has put out a list indicating that around 268 Indians were missing, while 158 Indians had been rescued. The rescued include people who were travelling to Kailash Mansarovar, as well as 21 people from Tamil Nadu who returned to India on August 28, with External Affairs Minister S Jaishankar receiving them at the airport. Srivastava also said that several Indian nationals were rescued by Nepali security forces, with India coordinating their return. He said the close cooperation between the two countries also allows Indian nationals to receive assistance under the framework of the 1950 India-Nepal Treaty of Peace and Friendship.
