Indianapolis 500 was one of the first games that used the Doppler effect to emulate car engine noise when they pass you by. I guess they could as well simulate the noises of the cars that you were passing by, but I wouldn't know anything about it - it was hard enough to stay on the track, not to mention overtaking the cars.
