India is closely studying the war in Ukraine, which has significantly influenced modern warfare tactics and strategies. As a result, the Indian army is being improved, according to Forbes.
India finds itself in a precarious situation, surrounded by two hostile neighbors - Pakistan to the northwest and China to the north. India has fought several wars with Pakistan over the disputed Kashmir region, and it continues to have numerous border disputes with China.
The first and most crucial lesson India has learned from the Russia-Ukraine war, as highlighted by Forbes, is the importance of resilient defense, particularly through fire control in buffer zones. This allows effective resistance against enemy advances. Both Russian and Ukrainian forces have achieved defensive resilience using artillery and drones, disrupting large-scale enemy offensives.
Against this background, India has accelerated its efforts to modernize its artillery systems. Following Ukraine’s example, India is adopting the standardization of heavy artillery to the 155 mm caliber, which is used by most Western countries. India's arsenal already includes some 155-mm artillery systems acquired from Sweden and the UK. Additionally, India is working to develop its own howitzers of this caliber.
Drones also play an important role in the war. Currently, India only has Heron drones, which it once bought from Israel. Now Delhi is buying 31 MQ-9 Reaper drones from the US and is also working on its own long-endurance drones. As for loitering drones, here too India has only the Israeli development Harop in its arsenal. It is capable of carrying a combat load of up to 23 kg. Currently, Indian companies Artemon Aerospace and Munitions India Limited are working on creating their own kamikaze drone. India is thus using lessons learned from the war, including the importance of maintaining a standoff with artillery and drones, to better prepare its national defence.
Recall, after the start of the Russian invasion of Ukraine, India sharply increased its trade with Russia, particularly in purchasing Russian oil, which continues to fund the Kremlin’s military machine.
