Medellín’s Festival de Descenso y Adrenalina is the high-octane evolution of the city's iconic Festival de Carros de Rodillos, bringing gravity racers, street thrill-seekers, and thousands of cheering spectators to the steep mountain roads connecting Santa Elena to the urban valley.
Core Highlights & Event Dynamics
The Evolution: Organized by INDER Medellín, the event modernized a 30-year tradition of homemade wooden cart racing by integrating modern non-motorized downhill sports like longboarding, gravity bikes, street luge, and drift trikes alongside classic ball-bearing carts.
The Route: Racers launch from high up on the mountain road near Santa Elena (Estadero El Pingüino) and navigate a technical, fast-paced 7 km downhill course, ending at Centro Comercial La Central in the Buenos Aires neighborhood.
Grassroots Engineering & Costumes: Beyond speed, a signature element is creativity. Teams craft eccentric kart bodies using wood, steel, and recycled materials, paired with matching costumes ranging from superhero squads to local folklore characters.
Community Fiesta: Supported by district initiatives and local participatory budgeting (Presupuesto Participativo), the event closes major arterial mountain roads, turning guardrails and hillsides into packed spectator zones.
