During the process of uranium becoming lead through radioactive decay, helium (a gas) is produced. Helium can move through rocks since rocks are porous. Gas can escape through rocks. We find rocks that have evidence for uranium, lead, and an abundance of helium (as a biproduct). This tells us that a lot of uranium has decayed into lead. But if these decay processes have taken place over long periods of time (100s of millions of years), the helium would have had plenty of time to leak through these rocks. Again, we find a lot of helium in rocks. We know the rate as to which helium can move through these rocks. Over millions of years, the helium we find would have leaked out and escaped into the atmosphere. The fact that we still find helium tells us that a lot of decay has happened in the past, but the decay must have happened over a short amount of time. If this helium were created over long periods of time, the helium would be gone--since it leaks out so quickly.
In short, the fact that we find helium in rocks tells us that the earth is young because if it were old, we should not find the amount of helium that exists. We should not find rocks comprised of so many helium atoms. The rapid rate of helium diffusion provides overwhelming evidence for a young earth. This evidence powerfully challenges the old earth paradigm.
