Unbelievable Surprise! On the 25th of May 2015, Real Freedom Productions spotted a Fingered Dragonet (1st Sighting in Andaman Sea!!) on the King Cruiser Wreck freedom-divers.com
The fingered dragonet, Dactylopus dactylopus, is found in the West Indo Pacific as far South As Lembeh & Komodo, Indoneisa, to as far North as Palau. NO REPORTS HAVE BEEN MADE OFTHIS SPECIES IN THAILAND! The first ray of each pelvic fin is effectively a limb or "finger" that the dragonet uses to walk along the seabed and dig for food. The male has warpaint-like facial markings and has long filamented rays on its dorsal fin that it holds forward when walking. The female has a bright orange upper lip.
WHY IS FINDING A FINGERED DRAGONET IN THAILAND (specifically on the King Cruiser Wreck) SO UNBELIEVABLE? There are actually 2 factors that make this so special:
1) Most obviously, this fish is not currently (nor has it ever been) listed as a species found in the Andaman Sea or anywhere in Thai waters for that matter.
2) Of equal importance, Dragonets are benthic animals (!), meaning that they live on the seabed. They thrive in areas like the muck of Lembeh Straits, or Anilao. Dragonets are well-adapted to benthic life: they are well camouflaged and at night they bury their bodies; the eyes and gills are placed high so only they remain above the sand. Therefore what in the world was a benthic critter doing on a Steel Wreck, where it has no possibility at all of following it's benthic nature. In the sand next to the wreck, ok.. But on top of the wreck (!?!).
