In this episode of Adventures Into History, we head into the woods of Washington County, Georgia — one of the state’s oldest counties — to explore a forgotten cemetery with incredible history.
I received a tip from a viewer about this mysterious burial ground, and after seeing a glimpse of what lay hidden here, I knew I had to make the road trip to see it for myself. What I found exceeded every expectation: a stunning 19th-century brick vault tomb rising from the forest floor — a rare and remarkable example of Southern funerary architecture.
This cemetery, known as the Woods Cemetery, is home to the final resting places of the Moye, Wood, Thornton, Johnson, and Darby families, among others. Their stories tell the tale of Georgia’s early settlement, the tragedies of 19th-century life, and the endurance of memory even in forgotten places.
We walk among the graves — some elaborately carved, others simple and weathered — and uncover the names of those who lived, loved, and died here more than a century ago. From Civil War veterans to infants who lived just days, this hidden cemetery reveals a deeply human story written in stone and brick.
