Update: If just the modifier view switch is what your after then the pre-installed "Modifier Tools" will serve you well!

I was frustrated with creating hundreds of objects, adding various modifiers like solidify, boolean, bevel etc and have the viewport slow to a crawl so I made a little add-on to hide and unhide all modifiers for all selected objects, while keeping the armature. This tool can also be used for toggling the effect of contraints.
