I had no clue this was a thing. This could of been a lot worse than a snapped axle at 3AM.
In a nutshell, while the left and right side axle shafts for the AMC Model 35 are identical parts, during assembly and installation on the Eagle line of cars the axle nut on the passenger side was overtightened at the factory. After a while the strain causes the end of the axle to snap off and you can potentially lose a wheel while driving with no warning.
There are no product safety, defective part or recall bulletins. None from AMC. None from Chrysler. Replacement axle shafts are no longer manufactured and yes, there are no promises a used shaft will be any better.
A troubling situation.
