Book Recommendation: Incandescence by Greg Egan.
This one will bend your brain. Egan delivers a great imagining of a future world in which beings can travel the galaxy as data and download lightyears away into avatar bodies. In a second story line, the Ark-Dwellers are pre-industrialist aliens inhabiting a rocky planetary crust fragment caught in the accretion disk of a black hole.
