CAI Gallery is pleased to present Traces, a duo exhibition featuring the Hungarian painter Aron Barath and the Romanian performance artist Szilard Gaspar. The exhibition presents six paintings, two sculptures, five photographs and a video installation, embodying the artistic process of a human intervention resulting in traces registered in physical matter.

How can one document a human action? Even more, how can we register the energy of a gesture into matter? The answer is in fact plain and simple. Our deeds always leave traces. By memory, by letter, by photography, or, emotionally and sometimes even physically. These traces carry a very specific momentum and a metaphysical weight. They register our existence, an intensity and a specific, unique irreproducible act of life.

Aron Barath (born in 1980 in Novi Sad, former Yugoslavia, resides and works in Budapest, Hungary) is best known for his abstract paintings marked by colour and the seductive qualities of paint as a substance. Traces of paint, dictated by colour and the gestures of the artist, create an interplay of transparency and impasto surfaces. Starting from tabula rasa, Barath frees himself from contemporary visual culture or communicational trends, dedicating his life and artist practice to what is pure, genuine and truthful, the essence of leaving traces of light, substance and colour.

Szilard Gaspar (born in 1991 in Satu Mare, Romania, resides and works in Cluj, Romania) has two main avocations in life. The first being a professional sportsman as a boxer, the second, as an artist. These two activities do not co-exist in separate spheres. In fact, they are strongly intertwined, one drenched in the other. As a result, the first is a thread throughout the latter, transforming boxing into an artistic practice.

“Action as performance represent the core of my approach, the transfer of energy between myself and the artistic matter. Everything that results from that registers the trace of the action through various mediums. They all stand witness to this energy discharge. Practically, through my final artworks, all I do is to record the momentum of singular, unrepeatable action.”

Szilard has performed and exhibited at renowned institutions and events, such as the Art Museum in Cluj-Napoca, Romania; the Romanian Institute for Culture in Lisbon, Portugal; the Art Encounters Biennial in Timisoara, Romania; the Romanian Institute for Culture in Vienna, Austria and the Pingyao Art Museum in Pingyao, China.
