Josh Morgerman is the world’s top hurricane chaser. Known as iCyclone by his hundreds of thousands of Twitter and Instagram followers, he has been chasing the most powerful hurricanes and typhoons across the world for nearly 30 years. He’s penetrated 54 eyewalls so far in his career and has been in the most powerful landfalling cyclone in the Western Pacific, the Eastern Pacific, and the Atlantic.
While most of us stock up on water and food and get our disaster plan in place, he heads right to the eye of the storm. This hurricane chaser has personally seen and experienced the most destructive forces of the planet’s most powerful hurricanes and documenting their impact on buildings, communities, and the environment; showing people this impact through his real-time, first-person narrative and videos; and collecting data that help scientists better understand these devastating events.
For most of his life, he’s been putting himself in danger for an adrenaline rush — and also for science. He founded iCyclone, a team of chasers, researchers, and meteorologists who make it their mission to film, report, and collect data while in the dangerous inner cores of hurricanes. The data he collects – while deep inside these atmospheric beasts – greatly assist scientists after each impact, when they piece together what happened in their detailed post-hurricane analyses. He has co-authored or contributed to a number of peer-reviewed weather papers and is respected for his raw and real-life observations. Josh is a Harvard grad with no academic training in meteorology.
Last year, he was also the star of the popular UKTV/BBC series, “Hurricane Man,” which aired on Science Channel in the United States.
In his words: “My biggest thrill now is hunting down a hurricane as it comes ashore, in a remote corner of the earth, to penetrate the storm’s eye—the calm center surrounded by the most violent winds—to collect rare data that otherwise wouldn't exist.”
