The Negev Desert lies in the southern part of Israel, covering an expansive 13,000 km2, which constitutes more than half of the country's land area. Predominantly barren and dry, the challenging conditions of this harsh land have restricted the number and size of settlements.
The Negev serves as the southern boundary of the Holy Land, with its name in the Bible denoting the direction "south." Several significant biblical events unfolded in this region, and during the Iron Age, small Israelite settlements emerged by digging wells and harvesting scarce rainwater.
In the Hellenistic and Roman eras, the Nabateans refined irrigation techniques, enabling the construction of impressive cities and fortresses along trade routes. The subsequent Byzantine period witnessed extensive desert agriculture around cities, supporting Christian pilgrimages to the Holy Land. Following the Muslim conquest, the Negev experienced a decline and was inhabited only by a limited number of Bedouin nomads.
With the establishment of Israel, various areas in the Negev were resettled, historic sites were rediscovered, and the region's unique nature and geological wonders have become increasingly popular.
