Science museums, critical thinking, and the scientific method—are museums teaching how science really works?
Museums excel at presenting scientific facts—but what about skepticism, pseudoscience, and how we know what we know?
In this presentation to the National Capital Area Skeptics (NCAS), Dr. Bruce Behrens examines science museum exhibits to evaluate whether they include skeptical content—or miss opportunities to challenge pseudoscience, conspiracy theories, and common misconceptions.
Based on a multi-method analysis including field visits, content analysis, and AI-assisted assessments, this talk explores how science is communicated to the public—and where it falls short.
This talk was a preview of Dr. Behrens’ Sunday Morning Papers presentation at CSICon 2024, a leading conference on science and skepticism.
Rather than focusing only on factual accuracy, this study examines whether exhibits help visitors understand how science tests claims and corrects errors.
Real-world examples include:
-- "Bloodsuckers: Legends to Leeches", which includes the chupacabra alongside real organisms—but misses an opportunity to apply scientific skepticism
-- Optical illusions and pareidolia displays that rarely explain the limits of human perception—despite their relevance to eyewitness reliability and belief formation
-- Exhibits that describe discoveries but omit key scientific methods like control groups, randomization, and blinding
The analysis combines field observation with AI-assisted evaluation to identify patterns across museum exhibits—revealing how even well-regarded institutions often avoid engaging directly with pseudoscience.
About the speaker:
Dr. Bruce Behrens received his Ph.D. in High Energy Physics from the University of Wisconsin–Madison and conducted postdoctoral research at Cornell. He is a research scientist at the Center for Naval Analyses and founder of the Behrens Science Museum (https://bsmuseum.org), which promotes critical thinking and the scientific method through exhibits on pseudoscience and the paranormal.
