Take a piece of my shadow
And run off to the woods,
By the edge of a meadow
Where an oak spread its roots.

Hide it well from the prying
And unscrupulous eyes,
But remember that time
And the place where it lies.

For one day, on a wander,
You may find yourself there,
And your children will ponder
A sudden breeze in the air.

You may share the word,
If they bother to ask,
That some things in this world
Are designed just to pass,

To deliver a message
And to render a tune,
Leave behind but a passage
Of mysterious runes,

Stretch the colour palette
Far beyond red and grey,
Without guilt nor regret
Bring a smile every day.

When you're down on the ground,
When the going gets tough,
When you can't hear a sound,
When it's just not enough,

Cast your thoughts to the meadow
Where we both learned to breathe,
With a piece of my shadow
Lying buried beneath.
