Clearwater Marine Aquarium is heartbroken to share the passing of Star, age 27, who passed away early Friday morning.
Our hearts are heavy with the passing of Star, a bottlenose dolphin who joined the CMA family in December 2025. As a working marine animal hospital, CMA specializes in providing care to marine animals that need recovery and rehabilitation before being released or providing a forever home to those that cannot be released due to physical limitation. All animals receive routine checkups from CMA’s expert team of animal care specialists and veterinarians.
On May 1, Star appeared to show signs of discomfort requiring supportive care. CMA’s veterinary team, animal care specialists, and independent outside experts evaluated and monitored her health around the clock. CMA’s experts immediately provided Star with veterinary intervention and care to keep her comfortable. Despite our best efforts, Star’s condition took a turn for the worse early Friday morning. A necropsy is scheduled to determine the cause of death.
The unwavering care and commitment to the quality of life for our animals has always been our foremost priority at Clearwater Marine Aquarium. Star held a special place in our hearts, forging a bond with our team as a member of our CMA family. Her passing leaves a profound impact on each of us. This moment serves as a poignant reminder of the impact these remarkable animals have on our lives and underscores the urgency of our conservation efforts.
We'd like to express our heartfelt gratitude to the dedicated staff and veterinary professionals whose tireless efforts, expertise, compassion, and steadfast commitment ensured the best possible care for Star. Their admirable dedication to the well-being of our animals is truly commendable.
