Ruth Samuels is a London-based British-Jamaican documentary photographer whose images uplift underrepresented voices, finding beauty and dignity in everyday life. Drawing on her professional background in international development - working with people from across Latin America, the Caribbean, and Eastern Europe - she discovered her passion for visual storytelling as a means to delve deeper into human experiences and spark new perspectives.

Her portraits celebrate the individuality of people from varied backgrounds, broadening our understanding of beauty and reaffirming the value we find in ourselves and in one another. Each carefully crafted image is both an observation and a meditation: an outward expression of an internal narrative, showcasing the subject’s essence and contributing to greater equity in representation.
Whether used for stills photography or filmmaking, a camera offers the user a unique opportunity to tell a story. Here at Wex, we recognise the value of those stories and believe they all deserve to be heard, as they provide an insight into the spectrum of human experiences lived across a nation of creative people.
Our #ChangeTheImage campaign showcases a selection of talented individuals from a variety of backgrounds, exploring the benefits of photography as a tool to provide therapy, raise awareness and drive social change.
