Margaret Mitchell is a Scottish documentary photographer based in Glasgow whose work explores the relationship between people, place and the wider social forces that shape our lives. Her photography often focuses on communities, childhood, identity and belonging, bridging the psychological and social landscapes that define human experience.

Working primarily through long-term documentary projects, Mitchell’s images examine the complexity of everyday life, often revealing how personal histories intersect with issues such as social inequality, family dynamics and the environments we inhabit. Her projects invite viewers to slow down and reflect on the lives behind the images, prioritising nuance, trust and human connection.

Her work has been exhibited internationally, including at the National Portrait Gallery in London and the Scottish National Portrait Gallery, and is held in the collections of the National Galleries of Scotland and the Martin Parr Foundation. She is also the author of the book Passage (2021), which reflects on disadvantage and privilege across generations through intimate documentary photography.

Mitchell has received numerous awards, including recognition from the Sony World Photography Awards and the Royal Photographic Society. Through her work, she continues to explore how photography can tell complex human stories with empathy, care and honesty.
