In 2007, a 22-year-old Mark Zuckerberg told a Stanford audience that young people are simply smarter. The industry rewriting every other industry took him at his word.

I watched it up close at Google. I was in my 50s when I got there, and the whole place ran on assumptions about who belonged. Nobody said people over 50 weren't welcome. We just weren't expected.

You can read it in the design. Funding aimed at founders under 30. Open floors, ping-pong tables, beer fridges, all of it shaped for people with no partner, no kids, nothing pulling them home.
