It all began with Mike Barr's Son of the Demon with the theft of Batman's DNA. Batman having children isn't a new concept; and while Batman has always had a surrogate family, these stories had been relegated to out of continuity flights of fancy. With Grant Morrison and Andy Kubert on board they took Mike Barr's concept and fleshed it out into a nuanced story of family, legacy, and what it means to be a hero.
