We're willing to give up some intelligibility in order to get some horizontal spread. Left/Right is here to stay.
Once you go to LCR, you need to take a decorrelation approach. Put different things in the center than left and right. And that center channel has to reach all of the seats. If you're going to make a channel to cover the whole room, it has to cover the whole room.
