The new single on Ipecac Recordings, released April 26th 2019.
Imani Coppola is a critically-acclaimed, American singer-songwriter and classically-trained violinist known for such hits as “Legend of a Cowgirl,” and “The World Should Revolve Around Me,” among her other works.
She was born Imani Francesca Coppola on April 6, 1978 in Mastic Beach, New York to an African- American mother and Italian-American father and is the second youngest of five children. Her family shared her love of music. Her mother Lorna played Bass, her father John was a Jazz Musician and her sister Maya was a singer-songwriter.
Imani began playing violin at age six and began singing and writing songs when she was six-years-old. She attended State University of New York at Purchase where she studied Orchestra and Studio Composition.
Her big break came during her freshman year when her sister Maya paired her with producer Michael Mangini. The duo cut three demo tracks which resulted in a bidding war. Coppola signed a recording contract with Columbia Records in 1997.
On October 28 or October 14 1997 Columbia Records released Coppola's debut album Chupacabra (A mysterious Vampire Beast) and the lead single “Legend of a Cowgirl,” became a top 40 hit in the United States and Europe and was an MTV favorite. The album received rave reviews from music critics praising the albums mix of hip-hop, pop, dance and alternative-rock, as well as Coppola's vocal skills. In 2000 Coppola left Columbia Records when the company shelved her second studio album Come and Get Me...What?!
Coppola went on to independently release Post Traumatic Pop Syndrome, Little Red Fighting Mad, Small Thunder, The Vocal Stylings of Imani Coppola and Audio Blahgs.
This is Coppola's second collaboration with IPECAC recordings known for being an “Artist Friendly” label. “Ipecac doesn't have a formulaic, cookie-cutter approach to releasing their artists material. They really take their time to figure out clever ways to give each artist their stamp of individuality,” said Coppola. “They always ask what your ideas are before offering their own. I feel an honest sense of ease knowing I can trust this label.”
