What was a TUDOR ROYAL WEDDING like and what was it like to marry Henry VIII? Today on History Calling you’re going to find out as we look at the wedding of Henry VIII and Catherine Parr in 1543. You’ll see the room in Hampton Court Palace where Henry VIII got married, learn who was present at Henry VIII’s final wedding and who wasn’t, what vows he and Catherine Parr (who was known as Lady Latimer at the time) made, who was at Henry VIII’s wedding to Catherine, how his daughters, Princess Mary Tudor and Princess Elizabeth Tudor, reacted to the event and why there was no need to have banns read out in anticipation of the marriage. I’ll also reveal who conducted the marriage ceremony between the King and the final Tudor Queen consort and read out an eye-witness account of this famous event in Tudor history. You’ll hear too why the future Edward VI was not at his father’s last wedding, nor was the bride’s brother, William Parr.
I’ll show you the marriage license of Henry VIII and Catherine Parr (also known as Katherine Parr) for what was to be his sixth union and her third and explain why the wedding was able to go ahead despite the fact that the bride and groom were related within the prohibited degrees of consanguinity, something which would have required a papal dispensation in years gone by. I’ll also show that the wedding ring was originally put on Catherine’s thumb!
