For a number of years, the IMA has been running a series of conferences to promote mathematics with the aim of demonstrating to both mathematicians and non-mathematicians the many uses of modern mathematics. Following last summer’s very successful IMA Mathematics 2020 series collaboration with the Newton Gateway to Mathematics ran two events in May 2021.

Abstract:
The UK’s mathematical sciences research output is set to expand dramatically over the next five years, with £60m of additional funds being distributed by the Engineering and Physical Sciences Research Council (EPSRC) per annum over the period 2020-2025. As part of this unique investment, the Isaac Newton Institute (INI) has received a £10m increase in its primary grant funding, effectively doubling its yearly income. This new money will allow a step-change in the activity of INI, and in particular, through the Newton Gateway to Mathematics, will give knowledge exchange with industry a significant boost. This will be delivered through expanded activity of the Gateway and a new national network of connected centres. This presentation will highlight the ways in which INI and the Newton Gateway to Mathematics will not only be able to add impact to its increasing number and variety of its research programmes, but also provide enhanced KE support to the wider community. As well as maintaining their underpinning role for the Virtual Forum for Knowledge Exchange in the Mathematical Sciences (V-KEMS) programme, the Gateway will continue to work with the International Centre for Mathematical Sciences (ICMS) to develop and deliver a UK connected-centres network to foster new collaborations and engagement opportunities.
