Our first open water fishing trip of the year is finally here! We headed out for an evening trout fishing session at a stocked pond, but things didn’t exactly go as planned.

My son was set up with a slip bobber rig for stocked trout, while I was forced to use my fly fishing rod… which is a problem because I’m honestly terrible at fly fishing. Last time out I lost flies in trees, brush, and basically everything except fish.

To make things harder:

- We only had 2-3 hours before dark
- The pond was packed with anglers and canoes
- We were fishing a completely new area
- We had no idea where the trout were holding

Would we actually find trout before sunset?

This father & son fishing adventure turned into one of our favorite evening trips yet.
