I'm not doing YouTube-first anymore, and it took a trip to the south of France for me to figure that out. I was sitting on a patio in Théoule looking at the Mediterranean, and I just started writing, no plan, no filming schedule, just me and my laptop. That's when it hit me: I'm a writer who happens to make videos, not the other way around, and my process needed to match that.
So here's the shift. Instead of filming my YouTube video first and pulling everything else from it, I write my Substack piece first, and that becomes the outline for my video. YouTube isn't going anywhere for me, it's still where I build trust and get found, but it's no longer where I start. I just needed to stop calling my writing "prep" and start treating it like the real foundation it always was.
